Over time, your computer can become groggy because of fragmentation, viruses, trojans, spyware, or other malware. To help maximize your performance, I recommend using a combination of programs. I recommend you use ESET NOD32 AntiVirus to scan for viruses and Spybot Search and Destroy (free) to scan for spyware and malware. Now, once these scans find and remove threats, move onto defragmenting your hard disk. Fragmentation is when files saved on a hard disk are scattered on the drive. This makes the drive take longer to load files, which slows the entire computer. I recommend using Defraggler (free) to defrag a hard drive.
